Trevor Funk scored three goals, while Dennon Armstrong and Max Semple chipped in a pair each, to lead the Coquitlam Adanacs to an 8-7 win over the New Westminster Salmonbellies in their BC Junior A Lacrosse League game, Tuesday at Queen’s Park Arena in New West.

The win was the Adanacs’ fourth straight to start the season, and lifted them into first place in the league standings with a game in hand over second-place Langley Thunder.

After the Salmonbellies opened the scoring, Coquitlam replied with three goals of their own in the first period to carry a 3-1 advantage into the intermission.

A power play goal by Jake Stott pulled the hosts back to within a goal. But again, the Adanacs answered with three goals, by Philip Buque, Funk and Max Semple.

New West scored the next four goals, and with 13:37 left in the third period, the teams were tied, 6-6.

Semple’s second goal of the game put Coquitlam back in front with less than six minutes left in regulation and Funk’s hat trick goal 48 seconds later gave them some breathing room.

They needed it, as Ben Stewart pulled the Salmonbellies to within a goal just 26 seconds later.

But Coquitlam keeper Nate Faccin, who faced 53 shots on the night, shut the door.

The Adanacs, who played two games in two nights, now won’t play again until next Tuesday, when they host the Delta Islanders, 8 p.m., at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex. They’ll also welcome the Burnaby Lakers onto their floor the next night.

The Port Coquitlam Saints host the Salmonbellies on Friday, 8 p.m., at the PoCo Rec Centre before they travel to Nanaimo for a game Saturday against the Timbermen.
