Coquitlam figure skater Kevin Reynolds is being inducted into the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame.

Reynolds, who retired from competitive skating in Dec., 2018, already has a place on the Coquitlam Sports Hall of Fame’s wall of honour. He trained most of his career at the elite skating program at Burnaby 8-Rinks, under Joanne McLeod.

Reynolds was the first skater to land two quadruple jumps in a single program, and five quads in one competition. He was a silver medalist at four Canadian championships and twice won the bronze.

But Reynolds’ athleticism was rarely rewarded by judges at international competitions. HIs best result was a gold medal at the Four Continents Championships in 2013, and at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, he helped Canada win a silver medal in the team competition but finished only 15th in the men’s singles event.

It turns out, though, Reynolds may just have been ahead of his time as the sport’s judging criteria has shifted over the past 10 years to emphasize athletic skills and jumping ability.

Reynolds said he’s “very proud” of being part of that change.

The induction ceremony will be held Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020, at the Metrotown Firefighters Hall in Burnaby. Tickets will be available in January at [email protected].
