Express snap losing skid in OT

Chase Danol scored on a one-time 1:33 into overtime to give the Coquitlam Express a 6-5 win over the Powell River Kings Saturday in Powell River.

The victory snaps the Express’ winless streak at eight games. Two of those losses were in shootouts and another was in overtime.

It also put Coquitlam five points ahead of the Langley Rivermen in the battle for third place in the BC Hockey League’s Mainland division. Langley lost their game Saturday to the Penticton Vees, 3-1.

The Express led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by Drew Cooper. The teams were tied 3-3 after the second period.

Coquitlam took a 4-3 lead early in the third period when Pito Walton scored his seventh of the season on a power play. But less than four minutes later Powell River tied it again.

Jack Cameron put the visitors in front again midway through the frame, but exactly a minute later the game was tied.

The Express had the man advantage heading into the five-minute extra period after Powell River’s Neal Samanski was assessed a match penalty at 18:53 of the third period for a cross check to the back of Regan Kimens’ head.

Other goal scorers for the Express were Connor Gregga and Joshua Wildauer. Kolby Matthews stopped 24 of the 29 shots he faced  in Coquitlam’s net while his teammates fired the same number at Kings’ goalie Mitch Adamyk.

Th Express move on to Cowichan Valley for a Sunday matinee game against the Capitals.
