Coquitlam long jumper Jasmine Lew is already hitting her stride as a freshman with the University of Toronto Blues track and field team.

Lew, a grad of Heritage Woods secondary school in Port Moody, recently jumped a personal best 6.11 metres to win the Cornell Upstate Challenge in Ithica, N.Y. It was the first time a U of T female athlete had jumped further than six metres since 1999. It also put her atop the U Sports track and field rankings, five centimetres ahead of Sandra Latrace from the University of Lethbridge. And she's ranked 18th by the Internation Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) in the indoor event amongst U20 female long jumpers in the world, and top amongst North American athletes.

Lew’s achievement was further honoured when she was named the Varsity Blues female athlete of the week.

Feb. 5: Story updated to include Lew's IAAF ranking.
