Coquitlam Metro-Ford won the Boys U-17 Cup national soccer championship held recently in Surrey.

Metro-Ford defeated Soccer Club Saint-Laurent from Quebec in the final, 2-1.

Tye Engmann opened the scoring for Metro-Ford just nine minutes into the match, but 12 minutes later, Saint-Laurent tied it up on a breakaway goal. Cameron Poynton scored what proved to the winning goal with a header into the corner of the net late in the first half.

The victory was a bit of retribution for Metro-Ford, who were defeated 2-0 by Surrey United in the provincial Premier Cup finals, but both teams advanced to the national tournament which was hosted by United.

Surrey finished fourth at the national event, losing the bronze medal match to Vaughan Soccer Club from Ontario, 2-0.

Coquitlam and Surrey opened the national tournament by playing to a 1-1 draw against each other.

Metro-Ford followed that up with a 4-4 draw against Suburban Football Club from Nova Scotia. But that was enough to earn them a place in the quarter-finals, where they defeated Winnipeg, 3-1.

In the semi-final, Metro-Ford beat Vaughan, 2-0.
