North Delta outgunned by Port Moody squad

It was a tale of two halves when the Port Moody Gunners defeated North Delta FC in under-21 men's premier division soccer last weekend.

It was a tale of two halves when the Port Moody Gunners defeated North Delta FC in under-21 men's premier division soccer last weekend.

After Port Moody call up Junhyung Lee opened the scoring four minutes into the game with an unexpected shot from the corner, North Delta appeared to take over the game.

The visitors managed a header from a free kick at the 14-minute mark and took a 2-1 lead going into the half after scoring a second marker nine minutes later.

However, the Gunners bounced back in the second. Jeff Rogers kicked home a Chris Attadia cross to tie the game at the 57-minute mark before Rogers then scored the game winner from the penalty spot 15 minutes later.

Goalkeeper Chris Lourenco made a solid save off a deflection in the dying minutes of the game to seal the victory.

The Gunners' division 3 team also had some success, improving its record to 2-0 on the weekend following a win against Aldergrove.

The game was even until the second half, when the Gunners' depth overtook a tiring opponent. Matt Mobilio opened the scoring on a breakaway, before Cam Sayers made it 2-0 on a rebound from Paul Eley's free kid.

Michael Yip earned the shutout with strong defensive efforts from Marc Celenza, Adam Bordignon, Hani Dbouk and Nick Leonar.

MERCURY LOSE

The Port Moody Mercury struggled in its opening game of the season, dropping a 5-3 decision to the SFC United Pegasus in under-17 boys division two soccer.

With several key players missing, the Port Moody squad put up a valiant effort, keeping the score within reach for most of the game.

After going down 1-0 early, the Mercury tied things up on a clinically executed penalty kick by Quinn Henney, a penalty earned by an outstanding attack by Liam Cordick. Thomas Staddon helped the club take the lead soon after, making it 2-1 going into the second half.

But the team was not able to sustain the lead until the clock ran out.

Late in the game the Pegasus were able to tie things up and eventually take a 4-2 lead.

The team made it 4-3 with a goal from Pasha Nejad and a tie was within reach. However, while pressing for the tying marker the Pegasus was able to pot its fifth of the game to take the win.

EXPLOSIVE

Kaisha Markiewicz scored the lone goal for the Coquitlam Metro-Ford TNT in a 1-1 tie against NSG Fury in under-16 girls gold division soccer last weekend.

Markiewicz buried a pass from teammate Olivia Dawson, to open the scoring 10 minutes into the game.

But the Fury were undeterred.

The club came back strong, forcing a solid defensive effort from Nicole Chursinoff, Isabel Antunes and Dawson.

Despite several opportunities and shots on goal by Risako Kazemi, Kirstin Davies, Jade Ryshak and Amanda Yap, the TNT could not find the insurance marker.

Eventually the Fury tied the game shortly after the midpoint and the game was tied 1-1 when the clock ran out.

REBELS DRAW

Milena Wilson posted her second clean sheet of the season as her Coquitlam Rebels played the West Vancouver SC Rangers to a 0-0 draw in under-13 girls Metro-Select division soccer last weekend.

Strong defensive performances from Madison Ciulla, Laura Marshall and Maiya Callister helped keep West Vancouver from putting the ball in the net as the team kept its undefeated streak alive.

Coquitlam will take on Delta Coastal this weekend.
