A pair of second-period goals by Nicholas Poisson cast the Coquitlam Express to the brink of elimination from the BC Hockey League playoffs.

The Prince George Spruce Kings beat the Express 5-2 Monday to take a 3-0 lead in their Mainland division semifinal.

Poisson’s goals sandwiched a goal by Coquitlam’s Dallas Farrell late in the second period that had tied the game at 2-2 after the teams had exchanged goals in the first period.

Layton Ahac then added an insurance goal 8:40 into the third period before the Spruce Kings sealed the win by scoring into the empty net with 25 seconds to play as they killed a penalty to Dylan Ahorn.

The score wasn’t indicative of how close the game was, as Prince George held a narrow advantage in shots, 34-32. Each team had only one power play.

The Express will try to keep their season alive in Game Four tomorrow night, 7:15 p.m., at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex.
