The Riverside Rapids went into the Fraser Valley AAA senior girls basketball championship tourney seeded third, and that’s just where they finished.

An 81-74 win over Yale in Sunday’s consolation final at Riverside secondary also earned the Rapids a place in the AAA senior provincial championships that begin Feb. 27 at the Langley Events Centre. They’re the only team to qualify from the Fraser Valley North division.

Jessica Parker led the Rapids with 22 points, while Sammy Shields sank 20.

The Semiahmoo Totems won the tournament, that they entered as the top-ranked team in the province. They defeated Walnut Grove in the final, 79-67.

The Rapids opened the tournament with an 81-46 win over Earl Marriott secondary last Thursday, then followed that with a 69-54 victory over Robert Bateman in the second round.

But they stumbled in last Saturday’s semifinal, losing to Langley’s Walnut Grove Gators, 83-67.

The other teams from the Fraser Valley North division that qualified for the tournament, including Terry Fox, Heritage Woods, Dr. Charles Best and Centennial, all finished out of the top eight.

Parker was named to the tournament’s first all-star team, while Shields earned a spot on the second team.
