The Royal City Curling Club rink skipped by Coquitlam’s Hayato Sato is undefeated heading into the third day of action at the 2020 New Holland Canadian junior curling championships in Langley.

Sato, lead Jacob Umbach, second Joshua Miki and third Matthew McCrady — who are all from Coquitlam or Port Coquitlam — have three wins in their three matches and lead the A pool at the competition. The team from Newfoundland and Labrador is also 3-0.

British Columbia’s second team, that is skipped by Richmond’s Johnson Tao and includes Port Moody’s Connor Kent, has one win and three losses.

Sato’s team opened its first appearance at the junior nationals with a nail-biting 4-3 win over Ontario on Saturday. Trailing 3-1, they scored singles in the eighth, ninth and tenth ends while keeping their opponents off the scoreboard to complete the comeback.

Sato followed that win up with an 8-6 victory over Northwest Territories on Sunday’s morning draw followed by an 8-3 win over the second B.C. team in the afternoon.

Sato will face 2-1 Saskatchewan this afternoon and then Newfoundland and Labrador this evening.

Championship pool play begins on Wednesday at the George Preston recreation centre.
