Since 1996, Sun Star Restaurant has been serving Chinese and Canadian specialties to the Coquitlam community. Those dishes include their popular breakfasts such as “Ed’s Breakfast” which has been a fixture since the opening in 1996, as well as their A, B and C combos which include sweet ‘n sour pork and other Chinese favourites. Sue has been working the till, serving customers and just “generally trying to make customers happy,” since it first opened.

While the restaurant’s owners have changed since Sue first started, she says the philosophy of “the customer comes first” has remained constant over the years.

“It’s a community and everyone comes here to visit each other,” says Sue. “(Many of them) have been coming here since the beginning and they don’t like change very much,” she laughs. Today, the restaurant is a fixture in the community with many regulars and generations of family filling its comfortable booths and tables.

Three groups in particular come in week after week, Sue says. There are a group of retirees who used to work at nearby Dairyland; a group of truck drivers and an antique car club.

Heidi, the restaurant’s manager and wife of the owner, says the restaurant has supported the community in many ways over the years. For instance, the restaurant donated gift certificates to the Centennial Highschool Dry Grad, which students could use to purchase meals after the event. Sun Star Restaurant also supports local churches by donating restaurant gift certificates.

The establishment has had so much success over the last five years since Heidi and her husband bought it in 2013 that they are expanding with a new location at 631 Lougheed Highway. Watch for it in July 2018!
