The City of Coquitlam certainly has a winning formula when it comes to creating an ideal work environment for its employees to grow, contribute, and ultimately provide a great community in which to live, work and play.
For the third year in a row, the city has been recognized as a Top Employer in B.C. for 2020 by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers.
This provincial designation identifies employers that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work.
And the City of Coquitlam ticked the boxes in numerous areas to earn the recognition.
At the forefront is the city’s work culture that is shaped, in part, by its Leadership Development Program.
“This program helps people grow wherever they are,” says Nikki Caulfield, Coquitlam’s director of HR and corporate planning. “The City of Coquitlam is big enough and incorporates so many different careers that it gives us an interesting way for people to grow in the same organization.”
Coquitlam’s transition as a community, including the opening of the Evergreen line SkyTrain extension, has helped drive opportunities over the past number of years.
“We are one of the fastest-growing municipalities in B.C., and that provides a lot of opportunity in terms of employment, growth and development,” Caulfield explains.
Coquitlam’s unique workplace culture creates space for people beginning their careers, as well as more senior staff looking to take up challenges that allow them to stretch and apply their talents and experience.
“Providing those types of diverse opportunities is part of what makes a top employer,” Caulfield says. “I definitely think it’s one of the reasons we are viewed as one.”
“But at the end of the day, great people decide where they want to put their skills and experience to work. And we want to make sure Coquitlam is the place where they choose to be,” Caulfield says. “In order to do that, you need to have healthy workplace cultures in place that focus on peoples’ development, ensure they have interesting work, and allow them to be innovative.”
The City of Coquitlam’s culture encourages staff to be engaged in inventive city building by being part of a committed public service organization that provides learning development opportunities and challenging work, while at the same time making it fun and enjoyable.
“It’s one thing to know you work somewhere great, but it’s another thing to be recognized from the outside that you are part of a wonderful organization,” Caulfield says. “And city council and staff take great pride in not only being recognized as an innovative city, but as a great place to work.”
