More essential workers have tested positive at a Coquitlam grocery store and Port Moody pharmacy, part of a wave of COVID-19 cases that have hit big grocery and pharmacy chains in the region this month.

According to Safeway’s parent company, Sobeys, at least two workers tested positive for COVID-19 at the store’s 1033 Austin Avenue location. The workers are last said to have worked April 20 and April 23, respectively.

The grocery store last had a worker test positive for COVID-19 in February.

The cases are among five flagged across Sobeys’ Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam and Port Moody stores this month. Others include two cases among workers who last worked at Port Moody’s Thrifty Foods on April 4 and one case at the Port Coquitlam Safeway on Shaughnessy Street on April 12.

Meanwhile, an employee at a Port Moody Shoppers Drug Mart at 3215 St. John Street tested positive for COVID-19 after last having worked April 20, indicated the pharmacy’s parent company Loblaw Companies Limited on its website.

In recent weeks, 11 businesses have been shuttered across the Tri-Cities due to transmission among employees.
