A Safeway off Austin Avenue in Coquitlam is under investigation after at least one worker tested positive for COVID-19.

The worker is last said to have worked Feb. 14 at 1033 Austin Avenue location, though the exposure notification was not posted by the grocery chain’s parent company Sobeys until Feb. 17.

It comes amid a major surge in coronavirus cases across the Tri-Cities. The BC Centre for Disease Control reported that COVID-19 cases surged 147% last week across the Tri-Cities, representing one of the largest spikes in new cases among any jurisdiction in Metro Vancouver.

Cases have also been revealed in other grocery chains this week. On Wednesday, workers at two Real Canadian Superstores in Coquitlam tested positive for the virus.

And in Tri-City schools, a wave of new COVID-19 cases has led Fraser health to report active exposures in over 30 facilities.
