POP TUNES

The City of Coquitlam’s Summer Concert Series wraps up tonight with a pop showcase at the TD Community Plaza at Town Centre Park (1299 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam). Grab a seat in the amphitheatre to hear Ashley Pater at 6 p.m. and the headline act Queer as Funk from 7:45 to 9 p.m. Shameless Buns and BeaverTails will have their food trucks on site. The free concert is supported by Genre Partner and FortisBC.

ART EXHIBIT

Place des Arts (1120 Brunette Ave., Coquitlam) opens three new displays in its Maillardville galleries: Sharing Culture Through the Natural World (Place des Arts’ community engaged art project); Evolution of Self and Indigenous Art (various artists); and Of the Earth (Fraser Valley Potters Guild Association). The first two shows will be on view in the facility from Sept. 9 to Oct. 19 (and online from Sept. 16 to Oct. 19), while Of the Earth will be on view at Place des Arts from Sept. 9 to Nov. 3 (online from Sept. 16 to Nov. 3).

FILM NIGHT

The Port Moody Film Society rolls Leave No Trace, a story about a father and daughter who live in Forest Park near Portland, Ore. The adventure/drama flick will be screened at the Inlet Theatre (inside Port Moody City Hall, 100 Newport Dr.) at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 plus a $5 society membership for the year.

KIDSPORT SALE

The biannual used equipment sale by KidSport Tri-Cities is at the Poirier Forum (618 Poirier St., Coquitlam) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Second-hand bikes, hockey gear and lacrosse outfits — in all sizes — can be picked up at a low cost. Admission is by donation or with a non-perishable item for the Share food bank. Until Sept. 9, used equipment can be dropped off at the Port Moody Recreation Complex, Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex or the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (Arena 3).

The Greater Vancouver Food Truck Festival is back for a community block party at Coquitlam’s Town Centre Park (1299 Pinetree Way). MID AUTUMN

STREET PARTY

The City of Port Coquitlam will close the newly rebuilt McAllister Avenue in the downtown core for a street party, from 1 to 7 p.m. Check out the free entertainment, displays and activities for the family. SEARCH AND RESCUE

You can meet the Tri-Cities’ heroes and check out their fleet of search and rescue vehicles at an open house at Town Centre Park (1299 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam). The Coquitlam SAR team, which is marking its 50th year under its first female president, Helena Michelis, will be near Lafarge Lake from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public can also learn about safety tips while hiking in the region, as well as watch the live demonstrations.

ELECTION SEASON

Coquitlam voters can meet candidates running in the civic election, which takes place on Oct. 15. The gathering at the City Centre branch of the Coquitlam Public Library (1169 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) is from 1 to 3 p.m. The event is informal; campaign materials will be distributed.

SEASON LAUNCH

The Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) starts its new season with a celebration of the arts. The party begins in the art gallery to open the latest exhibit, from 5 to 7 p.m.; speeches will be held at 5:45 p.m. Then head over to the Studio Theatre to see and hear the 19-piece big band, the Bruce James Orchestra.
