Movie Buffs

Penelope Cruz, Javier Barden and Ricardo Darin star in the flick Everybody Knows that will be screened by the Port Moody Film Society at the Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr., Port Moody) at 7:30 p.m. The story is about a Spanish woman living in Buenos Aires who returns home to near Madrid with her two children for her sister’s wedding. Hope in the Forest

Last fall, a wildfire swept through parts of Minnekhada Regional Park in Coquitlam. From 9 a.m. to noon, participants ages 16 and up can join a park interpreter to discover the impact of the flames and the resiliency of the forest in the face of disturbance. The cost is  $15 per adult or $7.50 for youth/adult 65+.

KidSport Sale

Bring a non-perishable food donation or cash to gain entry into the Poirier Forum (618 Poirier St., Coquitlam) for the biannual KidSport used gear sale, a fundraiser happening from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. that offers deals on gently used hockey, lacrosse, baseball and football equipment. Bikes are also on sale. Proceeds help pay for organized sporting registration fees for Tri-Cities families in financial need. Volunteers are sought.

Wildlife and You

World of Love

Go the Distance

Lace up your runners for the 2023 Traboulay 50K Challenge presented by FiiT Projects and Taylight Brewing. The run, in support of SHARE Family and Community Services, starts with event registration at the brewery (402-1485 Coast Meridian Rd., Port Coquitlam) and launches from Peace Park. Be Gone Weeds

Help the Burke Mountain Naturalists pull invasive plants like Japanese knotweed around the Deboville Slough in Coquitlam. First Nations Land

Join ethnobotanist, researcher and community activist Leigh Joseph for an online talk via the Coquitlam Public Library at 6 p.m. Leigh, whose traditional name is Styawat, is from the Skwxwú7mesh First Nation. She uses traditional Squamish harvest techniques to gather plants for her company, Sḵwálwen Botanicals, and recently published a book on essential Indigenous plant knowledge called Held by the Land: A Guide to Indigenous Plants for Wellness.

Lax Exhibit

Check out the new exhibit at PoCo Heritage Museum and Archives (150-2248 McAllister Ave., Port Coquitlam) that celebrates the city’s lacrosse success. The launch from 1 to 2:30 p.m. centres on the display that highlights the city’s field lacrosse games of the 1910s, as well as the first PoCo women’s box team of the 1970s. Statutory Holiday

Sept. 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada, honouring the children who never returned home and the residential school survivors, their families and communities. The day coincides with Orange Shirt Day and responses to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s call to action #80. On March 9, 2023, the Province of British Columbia passed legislation to make September 30 a statutory holiday.

Salsa Night
