A broken pipe under the pool at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC) is prompting an early maintenance closure of the tank next year.

The City of Port Coquitlam is temporarily shutting the leisure pool and aquatic area to swimmers for up to six weeks starting Jan. 2, 2024, to fix the issue.

Recreation director Glenn Mitzel told the Tri-City News that the current pool is safe to use and, in the new year, Ventana, the project manager for the PCCC build, will core a hole in the tank.

"The repair is relatively simple, but will take time to complete and allow the applicable cure time for concrete, tiles and grout," he said.

"Ventana has been an excellent partner in the development of PCCC and will work efficiently to rectify the deficiency as quickly as possible."

During the pool closure, the change rooms and showers in the aquatic area will also be shut to the public; however, the other areas of the Wilson Avenue rec hub will remain open, including the change rooms and showers in the main lobby.

As for residents who have signed up for swimming lessons and aquatic classes at PCCC in January and February, those sessions will move to the Hyde Creek Recreation Centre (1379 Laurier Ave.).

And that facility will have extended hours while the PCCC pool is being updated: Monday to Friday until 10 p.m.
