South Asian artists of all disciplines around the try-cities will get a chance to attend a special artists' gathering at Evergreen on Oct. 14

South Asian artists of all disciplines across the Tri-Cities are being invited for a special event on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Musicians, painters, singers, writers, poets and dancers 12 years and older are invited for a meet and greet at the art gallery inside Evergreen Cultural Centre.

The gathering is presented in partnership with Coquitlam Heritage and facilitated by Gurdeep Birdi, board member of the Diwali Celebration Society.

It's meant to provide a welcoming space for participants to connect with fellow artists from the Tri-Cities and to share stories of connection and empowerment while enjoying the stunning artwork of RISE: Sandeep Johal and Sara Khan in the gallery, a news release noted.

The event is free for attendance, however, registration is required. Refreshments will be provided and the event will be wheelchair accessible.

RISE: Sandeep Johal and Sara Khan is available to view at the Art Gallery at Evergreen from Sept. 16 to Nov. 26.

Johal's art confronts themes of bleakness, despair and ugliness with their dissonant opposites: brightness, hope and beauty and often centre around stories of women’s resistance and resilience, the release noted. While Khan’s art reflects on the significance of the mundane aspects of daily life through watercolour paintings often featuring fantastical, uncanny creatures and veiled autobiographical references.

The exhibition is an artistic collaboration of two distinct creatures, dynamic patterns and rich colour palettes to form new hybrid forms and bring out a playful and fantastical environment, the website said.

Their artworks celebrate the joy, power and complexities of womanhood from their perspectives as two South Asian women artists who are mothers to young children.
