First driver in Coquitlam double hit-and-run remains at large

A 25-year-old woman is still in hospital with serious injuries after being struck twice at the Guildford and Pinetree crosswalk last Saturday, Jan. 27.

A 25-year-old woman from Port Coquitlam remains in hospital with "significant" injuries after being struck twice in a crosswalk in Coquitlam last Saturday, Jan. 27.

And Mounties continue to appeal to the public for help to find the driver of the first vehicle that allegedly hit the pedestrian.

At a news conference at the detachment this morning, Feb. 1, Coquitlam Mounties said the driver of the second vehicle surrendered after the media release went out Sunday, Jan. 28; the driver is co-operating with investigators, police say.

Officers report that the woman was walking southbound — in a large green crosswalk, under the Millennium Line — at around 9:45 p.m. when the driver of a white car (believed to be a Hyundai Kona) allegedly hit her while turning left onto Guildford Way from Pinetree Way.

Seconds later, after falling to the ground unconscious, the driver of a red four-door SUV also collided with the woman, police say; both vehicles fled the scene.

Good Samaritans stopped to offer assistance to the victim.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Alexa Hodgins declined to say what colour clothing the woman was wearing; however, she said it was raining intermittently that night.

She said it’s likely both drivers were aware they hit the woman.

“They would have known that they struck the pedestrian, which caused damage to their vehicles,” she said.

Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area at the time — including other pedestrians around the Lafarge Lake–Douglas SkyTrain station or city hall, the driver of a white Tesla or passengers on the Coast Mountain buses 188 and 160 — and who may have witnessed the collisions to call police.

Anyone who has any information, witnessed this incident or may have video footage, is asked to contact the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2024-2286.
