Grinch steals Sally Ann kettle from Coquitlam Centre mall

"When we see this type of crime of opportunity, it’s really disappointing," said Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Alexa Hodgins.

Police are looking for a man who stole a donation kettle stand from the Salvation Army at the Coquitlam Centre mall last week.

RCMP say the unattended kettle was at the southeastern entrance of the mall (2929 Barnet Hwy.) — and close to the doors facing Pinetree Way — when the suspect took the pot.

The theft took place at around 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3.

Today, Dec. 14, in a bid to find him and the cash, Mounties released three images of the man, who is described as:

  • 40 to 50 years old
  • 5’8” tall
  • Medium build

And he was wearing:

  • black baseball hat
  • grey winter jacket with a hood
  • grey-scale camo double-shoulder backpack
  • light grey pants
  • light grey runners
  • medical mask

"When we see this type of crime of opportunity, it’s really disappointing," said Cpl. Alexa Hodgins, spokesperson for the Coquitlam RCMP, in a news release.

"All the money donated goes toward supporting those who need it the most, especially this time of year. To steal it goes against the entire purpose of the red donation kettles."

Police are asking who has information or may recognize the suspect to call Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2023-32727.
