What to do with all that crumpled up wrapping paper? Hint: don't throw them in the trash.

Port Coquitlam homeowners getting curbside pickup from the city can put out their Christmas recycling on their specified non-collection day this week.

For the fourth year in a row, the municipality is scheduling additional pickups for residents, starting as early as tomorrow, Dec. 26, to get rid of their extra recyclable waste from the holidays.

Blue carts can be left out on:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 26
    • Zones 3, 4 and part of Zone 5 (Langan Street and streets to the north)
  • Saturday, Dec. 30
    • Zones 1, 2 and the rest of Zone 5 (south of Langan Street)

Residents also have the option to take their holiday materials to a local recycling depot or to Metro Vancouver’s recycling and waste centre on United Boulevard in Coquitlam.

Here’s what’s not accepted for city recycling:

  • soft and flexible plastics, and overwrap
  • hard plastics such as Tupperware, plastic toys, tarps and laundry hampers
  • Styrofoam
  • clothing and shoes
  • hard- and soft-covered books
  • bags of mixed garbage
  • scrap metal (auto parts, chains, pots and pans, and hardware)
  • electronics (cell phones, computers, small appliances and light strings)

And, to dispose of live Christmas trees, Port Coquitlam firefighters will host their annual tree chipping event on Jan. 6 and 7, 2024, at Fire hall #1.
