Local Tri-City COVID-19 cases down by 30% in latest week-to-week report

It's the first one-third drop in numbers in two weeks — according to the BC Centre for Disease Control — showing the region's resiliency and urge to get vaccinated.

COVID-19 local health area case numbers for June 6-12, 2021.

Tri-Cities' vaccination rate is proving its successful battle against COVID-19 transmission across the region.

Between June 6 and 12, there were 57 lab-confirmed infections of the virus in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore and Belcarra, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control's (BCCDC) latest geographic distribution by local health area of case residence data.

Today (June 17), the report indicates the first drop in cases by 30% or more in the last two weeks.

It remains the third-highest case count in the Fraser Health Authority; Surrey (172) and Abbotsford (73) recorded the most infections.

In the previous data — from May 30 to June 5 — there were 81 cases of COVID-19 in the Tri-Cities, the first time in six months the data dropped to a seven-day double-digit count since 90 were detected in mid-January.

The five weeks before then were as follows:

  • 101 = May 23 to 29
  • 144 = May 16 to 22
  • 153 = May 9 to 15
  • 167 = May 2 to 8
  • 277 = April 25 to May 1

The lower case counts is likely a reflection of the current immunization rates in all five sub-regions of the Tri-Cities, according to the BCCDC.

Each section has surpassed the 75% threshold in terms of the number of eligible residents aged 12 years and older that have received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose.

Port Moody-Anmore-Belcarra is the first in the region to reach an 80% vaccination rate, according to the BCCDC's most recent Tableau surveillance data.

As of yesterday (June 16) Fraser Health has recorded 85,375 lab-confirmed COVID-19 infections since the start of the pandemic; there's also been 914 virus-linked deaths.

Currently, there are 634 active cases, 19 people admitted into critical care among 55 hospitalizations, and 83,797 recoveries.
