Crowds flocked to Coquitlam's Town Centre Park for Canada Day 2022, which was the city's first public celebration since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

More people are moving to the Tri-Cities — or at least staying in the region and moving to a neighbouring community.

According to new census data released today (Oct. 26), the area's population grew to 246,701 people 15 years and older, as of 2021, across Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore and Belcarra.

That's a 5.3 per cent increase compared to the last census in 2016 (234,300 people).

Coquitlam (6.7 per cent) and Belcarra (6.8 per cent) recorded the largest growths.

Meanwhile, Port Moody's population endured a modest decrease of 0.05 per cent with 16 fewer people calling the City of the Arts their home.

Based on the statistics available, it appears the average Tri-Cities resident is just over 40 years old and lives in a single-detached house with at least one other person — partner, family or otherwise.

As well, 50.8 per cent of eligible census respondents from the region identified themselves as women.
