Spring is just around the corner, which means homeowners are likely to sift and rid of older items from that dusty storage room.

One local organization is set to help residents safely dispose of any personal documents while also appealing to their generosity to raise funds for community initiatives, including those for families, youth and kids.

(And let's be honest, watching paper get sliced and diced into a thousand little pieces is oddly satisfying.)

The Rotary Club of Coquitlam is hosting its annual spring shred-a-thon event next month by donation only.

Over a four-hour period, residents are being encouraged to bring any unwanted papers to securely shred, such as personal documents, taxation forms, banking statements, credit card bills and any other older notes.

The option gives people the opportunity to prevent any kind of potential fraud, especially if the documents are tossed in the trash.

More than $12,000 was raised for community programs during the Rotary Club's first-ever shredding event in March 2021.

"Rotary is about service above self. We want to give back to the community," explained club president Dr. Jim Lane in an interview with the Tri-City News before the inaugural fundraiser.

The 2022 spring shredding event is scheduled for Saturday, March 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A station will be set up in the parking lot of Canadian Tire (1200 Seguin Dr.) — located at the corner of Lougheed Highway and King Edward Street.
