The 2022 Winter Olympics are officially underway as the opening ceremonies took place in the early Pacific time hours this morning (Feb. 4).

To get into the spirit of sport, Coquitlam is set to host an Olympics-themed skate this weekend at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex (633 Poirier St.) to begin a new slate of drop-ins.

As part of the celebration, participants are encouraged to wear the colours of the country they're rooting to earn gold this year.

There are three known Tri-City athletes competing at the 2022 games, all on the Canadian men's hockey team:

  • Ben Street (Coquitlam)
  • Adam Tambellini (Port Moody)
  • Kent Johnson (Port Moody)

Coquitlam Express players are also set to join in on the family-friendly event at their home barn Sunday afternoon (Feb. 6).

There are two 75-minute skating slots on the schedule:

  • 1:15 to 2:30 p.m.
  • 2:45 to 4 p.m.

Interested skaters won't have to pre-register, but will be first-come, first-serve and capacity limits will be enforced to follow current COVID-19 public health and safety protocols.

This includes mandatory masks for those aged five years and older, but can be removed when on the ice.

Proof of vaccination against the virus will also be required for those 12 years and older. Skaters aged 18 and up must also show a piece of government ID.

For more information, you can visit the City of Coquitlam's website.
