Port Coquitlam residents will now get dibs to register for drop-in recreation programs.

Starting Tuesday, April 2, PoCo residents will have a two-hour advance sign-up window to save a spot in skating, swimming, gym and fitness classes at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre and the Hyde Creek Recreation Centre.

That means PoCo residents can get first pick to register at 8 a.m. — two days before the start of a drop-in program — while non-residents can add their name at 10 a.m. two days prior.

The move is designed to give priority to local residents and follows similar council actions in Coquitlam and Port Moody to address demand.

In a recent report to Port Moody council, Nathan Taylor, the city’s manager of recreation, said 70 per cent of Port Moody’s recreation programs last year were fully booked; more than half the people put on wait lists were local residents.
