Port Coquitlam is set to celebrate gender-diversity, inclusion and equality this weekend.

Pride in PoCo's 2022 edition is taking place tomorrow afternoon (July 23) in Leigh Square, which will recognize the city's LGBT2SQ+ and IBPOC (Indigenous, Black, people of colour) communities.

The event will offer something for everybody, including arts and crafts, food vendors and live music by local performers.

As well, several organizations will be on hand with community displays, including:

  • Community Police
  • Downtown PoCo BIA (Business Improvement Association)
  • Family Smart
  • PoCo Heritage Museum and Archives
  • PoCo Lions Club
  • Terry Fox Library

Pride activities are part of Port Coquitlam's efforts to continue to a welcoming place in the Tri-Cities for gender-diverse people and under-served communities, an earlier news release reads.

In 2020, PoCo launched its equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) roundtable to help address issues like racism and discrimination.

"One of the top priorities identified by Roundtable members is to engage community members in celebrating Indigenous, Black, people of colour and LGBT2SQ+ communities, and to foster engagement with people of diverse experiences and identities," the city states.

Pride in PoCo will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. tomorrow in Leigh Square (2253 Leigh Sq.), and city hall will also be lit up in rainbow colours later that night.
