A broken water main in Port Moody left a neighbourhood without water and forced a local elementary class to cancel classes.

In an email to the Tri-City News, city Manager of Operations Jeff Little said the water main broke at 3 a.m. Wednesday at the 1200-block of Ioco Road, cutting off water to 85 residential customers and Pleasantside elementary school.

Within hours, School District 43 announced Pleasantside elementary would not be holding any classes due to the lack of water.

In a tweet early Wednesday morning, the city said it estimated it would restore water to the neighbourhood by 4 p.m. But in an email to the Tri-City News, Little said water had been restored by noon and warned residents they may see turbid water coming out of their taps, but that any discolouration is harmless.

“Once service is restored, you may experience minor, intermittent interruptions to water supply. If you experience dirty water, run the cold taps until clear,” tweeted the city.

By late afternoon, repair crews had repaved the road and normal traffic had resumed, according to a city spokesperson.

The city of Port Moody has not yet determined what caused the water main to break.
