The principal of Centennial Secondary is moving on up.

Today, Jan. 31, School District 43 (SD43) announced Anthony Ciolfitto will replace Gerald Shong as its new assistant superintendent.

Shong, who has worked in the Coquitlam-area school district since 1991, is retiring.

In a release sent to the Tri-City News, SD43 noted Ciolfitto’s 17 years of administrative work, including as principal of Riverside Secondary in Port Coquitlam and as vice principal at Port Moody Secondary.

“I am humbled and honoured to be joining our District Leadership Team to serve the students and families in School District 43,” Ciolfitto stated in the release.

Shong, who taught at Burquitlam and Meadowbrook elementaries, as well as George Pearkes Junior Secondary, Minnekhada Middle and Centennial and Terry Fox secondaries, started in 2008 as a district administrator.

He was vice principal at Port Moody Secondary before being appointed the principal at Gleneagle Secondary in 2011; four years later, Shong was named the assistant superintendent to oversee one-quarter of the district schools.

Over the years, Shong was also a school sports coach and a co-chair on the design teams for seven new schools, six additions and the Education Learning Centre.

Ciolfitto will officially take over from Shong on April 2, 2024.
