Awesome Place Coffee and Dessert on The High Street in Coquitlam is closing April 27.

A popular café and bakery in Coquitlam's City Centre neighbourhood is closing up shop at the end of the month, leaving a trail of crumbs and devastated macaron and dessert lovers in its wake.

For five years, Awesome Place Coffee and Dessert (136-1153 The High St.) has been serving up a selection of rainbow-coloured macarons, baked cheese tarts, banana pecan and hazelnut espresso pound cake, hot and iced coffees, frappes, and delicious sandwiches.

But owner Sam Choi said the shop will close on April 27.

A combination of factors led to the closure — the lease was ending, a new location hasn't been found and the couple needs a break, Choi said.

However, plans are to re-open somewhere else in the Tri-Cities, if a location can be found, and Choi is set to announce via Instagram when that happens.

There are challenges, of course, but Choi said he wants to keep the business in the area because he lives in Coquitlam and is raising four kids here.

Finding a new spot will be important and will take some time, he admits.

"It's very hard to find a location especially with a retail shop; we have been looking for an empty space or someone who is operating," Choi acknowledged.

Still, it will be good to take a break and get refreshed.

And customers who love his wife's macarons can stock up because there is a special deal until closing: buy one box of five and get another box 50 per cent off.

That's the Awesome Place Coffee and Dessert's special "good bye for now" price.

"We'll hopefully be around in the summer," Choi said.
