The year's first snowfall has resulted in several accidents in Port Moody's Heritage Woods neighbourhood and the closure of Turner Creek Drive.

The year’s first snowfall has created road chaos in higher areas of the Tri-Cities.

Port Moody police say there has been several vehicle incidents in the city’s Heritage Woods neighbourhood and Turner Creek Drive is closed.

In Coquitlam, RCMP is advising motorists to “only travel if necessary.”

The detachment said in a post on social media that it has “received multiple collision reports in a very short period of time.”

Roads in the Austin Heights area were also slippery and some vehicles struggled to make it up even slight inclines soon after the snow started falling in earnest at around 2 p.m.

After a relatively mild and dry winter so far, cold weather is settling in for the next several days.

Temperatures are expected to plummet to -13°C by Friday morning, Jan. 12, and accompanying wind gusts will make it feel as cold as -22°C. Skies will be sunny, though.

The deep freeze is forecast to continue through the weekend. The thermometer won’t get higher than -5°C on Saturday, Jan. 13, and it may reach 0°C on Sunday, Jan. 14, with a mix of sun and clouds.

Next week, temperatures will moderate slightly but wet snow or a mix of snow and rain could fall on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 16 to 18.
