PENGUIN PLUNGE

Christen the new year by taking a dip in the Port Moody Inlet — for a cause. The Pleasantside Community Association hosts its fundraiser at the Rocky Point Park pier in Port Moody (2800-block of Murray Street) at 1 p.m. Registration opens at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $5 per person or $10 for a family of four. CHOIR CALL

If you’re looking to be a part of a big sound and want an energy boost for your brain, a Tri-City choir wants you to join its group in the new year. The first 2024 rehearsal for Choral Connections is tonight from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Trinity United Church in Port Coquitlam (2211 Prairie Ave.). Registration is open until the end of January. No audition is required; however, applicants should be able to read music. The choir is led by Ingrid Gay and accompanied by Vincent Lo.

Take your live Christmas tree — without tinsel or decorations — to the Port Coquitlam Firehall 1 (1725 Broadway St.) to be chipped. The event is by donation and runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, the Port Moody firefighters will have their drive-thru Christmas Tree chip from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Inlet Centre firehall (150 Newport Dr.). The cost is a minimum $5 donation; tree pick-up is available by emailing [email protected]. And, in Coquitlam, organizations will be chipping trees to raise funds at the following locations: Mundy Park (641 Hillcrest St.); Town Centre Park (Lot A, 1299 Pinetree Way); and Canadian Tire (parking lot, 1200 Seguin Dr.).

RECYCLE DAY

Port Moody residents looking to recycle their holiday waste can drop them off at the Port Moody Recreation Complex parking lot (next to the tennis courts, 300 Ioco Rd.) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The annual Centralized Recycling Day accepts paper gift wrap, boxes, Styrofoam, packaging, plastic film and overwrap (Styrofoam and plastic film must be bagged separately). Ribbons, bows, foil gift wrap and glass are not allowed.

REPAIR IT

Bring your broken household item or ripped clothing to the monthly Repair Cafe, happening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Port Coquitlam Public Works Yard (1737 Broadway St.). The event is run by the City of Port Coquitlam with volunteers from the Rotary Centennial club.

MINERS TRAPPED

Beneath Springhill: The Maurice Ruddick Story is a play about Maurice Ruddick who served as a lifeline to his fellow miners during nine days in 1958 while they were trapped 4,000 ft. underground. Created by Beau Dixon, with music and lyrics by Rob Fortin and Susan Newman, the one-man show runs from Jan. 23 to 27 at 7:30 p.m. (with a matinee on Jan. 27) at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam (1205 Pinetree Way).
