Winds ranging from 60 to 80 km/h could speed through the Tri-Cities as early as tonight (Jan. 5), according to Environment Canada as the agency has issued a special weather statement for the region.
National meteorologists are predicting strong winds to last for several hours.
It's anticipated to push in a southeast direction thanks to a low pressure system moving north from the coast towards Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore and Belcarra.
"Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur," Environment Canada's alert reads as of 4:30 a.m. today, noting communities near water are likely to be more impacted.
"High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches."
Winds are expected to ease around midnight to between 20 and 40 km/h.
And while some sun is set to break through before the weekend, Environment Canada encourages residents to keep their umbrellas and raincoats handy.
The Tri-Cities forecast is calling for rain showers and a low of 8°C that'll continue into Friday morning (Jan. 6).
Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 7-8) are also expected to be wet with a 60 per cent chance of rain both days, and that trend is set to stay put with more wet weather anticipated for next week.
