Coquitlam Express swept away by Silverbacks at BCHL showcase

The first appearance by the Coquitlam Express in this year’s BC Hockey League showcase Wednesday aftternoon in Chilliwack proved to be anything but.

The Express was defeated 5-2 by the Salmon Arm Silverbacks at the annual gathering of all BCHL teams at a central location to show players off to college and pro scouts.

Coquitlam trailed 2-1 after the first period and 4-2 after the second.

Arlo Merritt and Jaeger Murdock scored for Coquitlam, which managed only 22 shots on Salmon Arm shotstopper Liam Vanderkool.

Salmon Arm’s goals came from Simon Tassy, Mathieu Cobetto-Roy, Luca Matta, Ethan Ullrick and Brandon Santa Juana scored into an empty net after Coquitlam goalie Adam Manji was pulled for an extra attacker late in the third period. He had faced 35 shots.

The loss by the Express was its third of the season against two wins. The team is in sixth place in the Coastal division.

Coquitlam’s next game at the showcase will be Friday morning at 10 a.m., against the Nanaimo Clippers, which has yet to lose this season and sits atop the Coastal division standings.
