Port Coquitlam cyclist killed in collision

The intersection of Kingsway and Broadway were shut to traffic early Saturday morning as police gathered evidence

A 29-year-old Port Coquitlam man was killed early Saturday morning, Feb. 29, after he was struck by a vehicle while cycling through the intersection at the south end of Coast Meridian Overpass.

The accident occurred just after 2 a.m. when a minivan heading east on Kingsway Avenue struck the cyclist while headed south off the overpass.

The cyclist died on scene.

RCMP cordoned off the intersection, blocking traffic until about 10 a.m. Saturday. That’s when a tow struck removed the vehicle, its windshield smashed, from the side of the road. A bicycle still lay next to the curb.

“At this point in the investigation we’re still trying to piece everything together,” said Sgt. Quentin Frewing, who is in charge of the Coquitlam RCMP Criminal Collision Investigation Team.

Police are still trying to track down next of kin to inform them of their family member’s death.

The male driver of the vehicle is cooperating with police and, according to Frewing, RCMP do not believe that impairment was a factor in the collision.

As the investigation into what happened progresses, Frewing said police may shut down the intersection again should they need to do a reenactment, take daylight photos or have a drone take aerial photographs. But, he said, that could be months away.

In the meantime, Frewing said police are still canvassing for video surveillance that may have captured the accident and are looking to track down several witnesses who are said to have left the scene before speaking with RCMP investigators.

Anyone with information related to the crash is asked to call Coquitlam RCMP’s non-emergency number at 604-945-1550 and ask for Cons. Bryan Battel.
