New search engine to help pregnant Tri-Cities residents find maternity care

There's a new way for pregnant residents in the Tri-Cities to find a primary care provider that's right for them.

Last month, an up-to-date online search engine was launched by Pathways Medical Care Directory for expected mothers in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore and Belcarra seeking pregnancy and maternity care in the region.

In a release to the Tri-City News, the Fraser Northwest Division of Family Practice said 24 per cent of healthy newborn babies do not have a primary care, according to the latest CHSA Matrix level data available (2019-20).

Doctors of BC president Dr. Ramneek Dosanjh believes the new digital portal allows for resources and information that's easy to find for anyone at any stage of pregnancy.

She added it can also help book virtual or in-person appointments with local family physicians and nurse practitioners.

"The ability for pregnant patients to find detailed information in their community for their pregnancy needs such as hospital, language of provider, and types of specialized care will be of great relief for those soon to have a baby."

Pathways' website itself was designed by local prenatal health care providers, the Fraser Northwest Division of Family Practice explains.

It's "one-stop shop" process also invites users that need to find a family doctor, too.

Fraser Northwest Division of Family Practice is encouraging any expecting patients having trouble finding a provider to sign up on its waitlist, which is set to help connect them with a physician "as soon as possible."

The organization said Pathways is supported by B.C's health ministry through its general practice services committee.
