Coquitlam RCMP handed out nearly 4,200 traffic violation tickets across its jurisdiction in all of 2023.

Mary Hill Bypass. Lougheed Highway. Pinetree Way. Como Lake Avenue. Shaughnessy Street.

If police pulled you over for speeding or being distracted behind the wheel last year, it was likely along one of these five stretches in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam.

According to year-end results from Coquitlam RCMP, which covers the two municipalities as well as Anmore and Belcarra, the detachment issued 4,163 violation tickets in its designated hotspots — or High Accident Zone Enforcement (HAZE) areas — in 2023.

The biggest number was along the Mary Hill Bypass with 1,666 tickets; the intersection at Lougheed at Pinetree Way came second while speeding along Como Lake Avenue was third.

In September and October alone, Mounties issued 814 tickets in HAZE areas. During those two months, officers handed out 83 tickets to drivers at Lougheed/Shaughnessy, where distracted driving is being enforced.

HAZE areas are identified using accident data from the Insurance Corporation of BC (ICBC). Speed Watch volunteers and speed radar detectors are also used.

"Our goal with traffic enforcement is to reduce harm while changing unlawful behaviour to increase road safety," said RCMP spokesperson S/Sgt. Mark McCutcheon in a news release.

"Often times, we find that public perception of the dangers — or lack of dangers — on a roadway do not match the collision statistics for that location. We hope that showing the public how areas are identified for police enforcement, providing our traffic enforcement calendar and sharing violation ticket statistics per location will help people understand why certain areas see higher traffic enforcement than others."
