REPAIR CAFE

Coquitlam residents are invited to bring small household items that need to be repaired to the city’s Repair Café, running today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mundy Park Field House (629 Hillcrest St., Coquitlam).

POKEMON TOURNEY

Kids ages nine to 13 are invited to participate in a single knockout format Pokémon Tournament starting at 11:30 a.m. at the City Centre branch of the Coquitlam Public Library (1169 Pinetree Way). Prizes will be handed out to first, second and third place winners, with small takeaways for all participants. The room will be available for exhibition play after the first round.

LUNAR NEW YEAR GALA

The Golden Maple Lunar Near Year Gala returns to The Show Theatre at the Great Canadian Casino (2080 United Blvd.) from noon to 4:30 p.m., with a temple fair and multicultural performances. Proceeds from the event will support to rebuild of Hazel Trembath Elementary, which was destroyed in an arson on Oct. 14, 2023. Called "A Celebration of Love," the Year of the Wood Dragon festivities are being hosted by the Golden Maple Culture and Arts Association.

DRAGON YEAR

Start the Lunar New Year off early with the Coquitlam Heritage Society, which from noon to 3 p.m. will host a celebration at Mackin House (1116 Brunette Ave.). You can browse through books, enjoy a snack, have a photo taken and hear a story time (in English at 1 p.m.).

STAND-UP COMEDY

Comedy and author Ryan Murphy talks about his life and new book My Life’s a Joke: An Afternoon of True Tales from a (Happily) Retired Stand-up Comedian, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Poirier branch of the Coquitlam Public Library (575 Poirier St.). Murphy was a comic for 15 years.

EAST COAST JAM

Join East Coaster Adam Faber for a sing-along musical jam session. The kitchen party from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. takes place in the Kyle Centre dance room (125 Kyle St., Port Moody). Bring an instrument and learn the songs; songbooks will be provided. All musical skill levels are welcome.

CHECK MATE

Families can pop in to the Poirier branch of the Coquitlam Public Library (575 Poirier St.) from 2 to 3:30 p.m. to try their hand at chess. Chess sets will be provided.

LEGION NIGHT

Enjoy the tunes and jump on the dance floor at the Royal Canadian Legion branch 263 (1025 Ridgeway Ave., Coquitlam) for a fun night with Vinyl. The band hits the stage at 7 p.m.

BRAZILIAN RHYTHMS

Tom Keenlyside and his sextet take to the Inlet Theatre stage in Port Moody (100 Newport Dr.) for the first show of 2024 presented by the Inlet Theatre Music Series, which is organized by Port Moody musicians William Sample and Darlene Cooper. The band showcases bossa nova to samba tunes starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35.

BOND, JAMES BOND

The Coquitlam Celebration Choir sings the music from 50 years of James Bond films at the St. Laurence Anglican Church (825 St. Laurence St.) at 7:30 p.m. The fundraiser supports Backpack Buddies and Operation Namaste.

MINERS TRAPPED

Beneath Springhill: The Maurice Ruddick Story is a play about Maurice Ruddick who served as a lifeline to his fellow miners during nine days in 1958 while they were trapped 4,000 ft. underground. Created by Beau Dixon, with music and lyrics by Rob Fortin and Susan Newman, the one-man show run ends tonight at 7:30 p.m. (with a matinee on Jan. 27) at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam (1205 Pinetree Way). Tickets are $50/$42/$16.

SKETCH COMEDY

The Brunch Comedy lands in Coquitlam for a show in the rehearsal hall at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam (1205 Pinetree Way). See the award-winning duo Allie Entwistle and Kerri Donaldson perform at 8 p.m.

SALSA DANCE

Slip on your dance shoes and groove to the Latin beats with Alberto Gonzalez and Teresa Szefler of the Salsa Dance Zone. Its dance lesson for beginners at the Port Coquitlam Legion (2675 Shaughnessy St.) starts at 8 p.m. And, at 9 p.m., the dance floor opens for the dance party until midnight. Admission is $15. All ages are welcome.
