The Editor, Re. "Advocates push an extra 0.5% TransLink sales tax" (The Tri-City News, Aug. 28). The notion that a regional 0.5% sales tax increase will solve TransLink's financial ills is naive in the extreme.

G arbage, or to use the more politically correct term waste, is big business. Really big. It can also be a messy business, particularly when politicians get involved.

The Editor, My husband and I rode our bikes this evening to Fremont Playground (near the river, along the Fremont Connector) for a picnic dinner and play at the park with our two- and five-year-old boys.

The Pacific National Exhibition pulled out all the stops to put on a good show this year. It kept admission affordable by dropping two days off the two-week stint and reducing ticket prices.

M onday, of course, is Labour Day in Canada. It's meant to be a day to celebrate workers' rights and to reflect upon the sacrifices of those before us who helped enshrine safety, fairness and dignity in the workplace.

The Editor, I just want to remind dog owners: Pick up after your pet - not only is it civilized and expected of you, it's required under the city bylaws. Please be considerate.

Alush, green lawn, freshly mowed and without weeds, is something to behold. The outfield grass of a professional baseball park or the green on a championship golf course are part of sports lore and are not achieved without much care and effort.

The Editor, Re. "Who should fill B.C.'s vacant seat in the Senate?" (Face to Face, The Tri-City News, Aug. 23). I'd like to take this opportunity to nominate my cat, Tugger, for the Senate of Canada.

W hen people ask me what I do for work, I like to say that I ask people how to properly spell their names for a living. If a fellow journalist is in the room, I sometimes get a laugh. If not, crickets.
